Explore the natural coastal environment of the area with a visit to Huntington Beach State Park, a coastal preserve and state park in Murrells Inlet, SC, a short drive from Pawleys Island.
The Education Center here has a saltwater touch tank, where you'll have the opportunity to learn about a variety of threatened and endangered species that inhabit the park, pet a stingray or horseshoe crab, or see a baby alligator or diamondback terrapin up close. Visit the 30 room Atalaya Castle, a National Historic Landmark located in the park, for a self-guided or guided tour. Atalaya Castle was the winter home belonging to Archer and Anna Huntington, the noted sculptor and founders of the famed Brookgreen Gardens.
For something a bit more adventurous travel along the 26 mile Bicycle Trail from Huntington Beach to Litchfield Beach or hike one of the trails that will take you through the park's freswater lagoons, salt marshes, and maritime forest areas for close-up views of the wildlife and scenery.
If you are drawn to the water, you can spend your time relaxing along the three miles of unspoiled beach found here in the park, navigate the creeks and marshlands of the South Carolina shore by kayak or canoe, or fish the park's jetty, wade into the surf, or cast a line from the beach. As one of the finest bird watching sites on the East Coast the species of bird-life here is bountiful with varieties of wading birds, ibises, plover, ducks, gannets, loons, marsh wren, and more.
The park has many boardwalks and observation decks to make the most of your viewing experience as well as scheduled coastal exploration programs you can join in.
